Maiji Mountain

Maiji Mountain is located in Maiji Village, Maiji Town, Maiji District, Tianshui City, Gansu Province. The watersheds of the Yangtze River and the Yellow River pass through the scenic area.
Maiji Mountain Scenic Area covers an area of 215 square kilometers and has five sub-scenic areas: Maiji Mountain, Xianren Cliff, Shimen, Quxi and Jieting Hot Spring, and more than 180 scenic spots. The scenic area has rich and diverse animal and plant species, unique geological landforms, and typical climate. The Maijishan Grottoes art is the main feature, and it also has natural landscapes such as red cliffs, valleys, springs, white pines, and dense forests and seas of clouds. The Maijishan Grottoes were built in the early fifth century and have preserved 221 caves, 10,632 clay and stone sculptures, and more than 1,000 square meters of murals with rich themes. The Maijishan Grottoes are famous for their main art forms of clay sculptures and stone-embedded clay sculptures. They are the only grottoes in China that preserve the most complete system of statues from the Northern Dynasties. They are also the only grottoes that preserve examples of cliff-style architecture in the Northern Dynasties in China. They are known as “Oriental Sculptures” Art Exhibition Hall” is one of the “four major grottoes” in China.
